HEALTH AND WELLBEING is….

.".a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

   - The World Health Organization

WELLNESS is....

  • “a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential
  • "a multidimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being, and the environment"
  • "is positive and affirming”

    -  The National Wellness Institute

Girl meditating When most people think of “wellness,” or “Wellness practices” they tend to only think of maintaining a good diet and getting adequate exercise. However, there are many types of “wellness” and “self-care” practices. According to Berkley Well Being Institute and Good Therapy, there are eight different dimensions of wellness that incorporate our lives, and that can be “compromised by lack of support, trauma, unhelpful thinking styles, chronic illness/disability, and substance use.” Those dimensions are:

MENTAL WELLNESS is……

“an internal resource that helps us think, feel, connect, and function; it is an active process that helps us to build resilience, grow, and flourish.”

At KCW Psychological Services we encourage our clients to work towards obtaining and maintaining all aspects of wellness, and we integrate wellness practices and interventions in our treatment modalities when warranted. We know that the mind-body connection allows for mental, physical, and spiritual health and holistic healing.  We acknowledge that stress and illness can wax and wane throughout a person’s life, and we are not saying that wellness can only be obtained void of these things. However, we encourage our clients to integrate wellness practices in their lives on a frequent and consistent basis in order to create and maintain a healthy life balance. This could include creative and expressive arts activities as well.  With that being said, we know that nobody is perfect, so we encourage practicing Self-Compassion, Offering Self-Grace, and focusing on PROGRESS over PERFECTION!
